Itโ€™s time to shift the narrative and embrace the wisdom, power and freedom that this phase of life can offer.

In many cultures, menopause is seen as a powerful and positive transition, not just a biological event. In West Africa, for example, menopause is often welcomed as a time of ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐๐จ๐ฆ and ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ.โฃโฃWomen no longer bear the risks of pregnancy, and instead, they gain new social status, one of ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ฆ and ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ. Menopausal women are treated with deference, their opinions sought after in family and community matters.โฃโฃ

This cultural reverence for ageing turns what many in the West see as a difficult time into something to be celebrated. ๐€๐ ๐ž๐ข๐ง๐  ๐›๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐ฃ๐จ๐ฒ to West African women. We believe ageing is a privilege. It is a gift from God.โฃโฃHowever, itโ€™s important to acknowledge that for some women, particularly those who have struggled with fertility, menopause can also bring sadness, as childbearing is deeply valued in these societies.โฃโฃWhat can we learn from this? ๐Ž๐ฎ๐ซ ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฉ๐š๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ ๐ž๐ข๐ง๐  are heavily influenced by cultural beliefs and the roles society assigns to women.

Perhaps itโ€™s time to shift the narrative and embrace the wisdom, power and freedom that this phase of life can offer.
